"Afro x Naut [af-roh-nawt] is the product of soul searching through the anomalies of black identity and Afro-Futurism. It aligns the black experience with that of futuristic beings; thus the jump between the past and the future. A new Black consciousness. It adopts, borrows, and steals subconscious and conscious symbols of blackness.
Afro x Naut was created by interdisciplinary artist and designer Cairá Lee Conner in 2013, after stumbling across the philosophy of Afro-Futurism through the late artist Rammellzee and the film Last Angel of History by John Akomfrah. Cairá uses acrylic and watercolor painting, as well as illustration, digital design, wood, found objects, and unique fiber work to explore the past, present, and future. She is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied Fashion Design and Illustration."
